Rep. Bill Keating Urges National Security Adviser Sullivan to #LetUkraineStrikeBack
Sep 11
Rep. Bill Keating (D-Mass.), ranking member on the House Subcommittee on Europe, sent a letter to Jake Sullivan, President Biden’s National Security Adviser, urging him to change his position on the use of U.S.-provided weapons against Russian military targets.
The Honorable Jacob J. Sullivan Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs The White House Dear Mr. Sullivan: Thank you for your continued and resolute commitment in supporting Ukraine's fight for freedom against Russian aggression. I share your conviction that Russia must be defeated, and that Ukraine's democracy must be defended. The stakes of this conflict go far beyond victory in Ukraine. U.S. support for Ukraine has galvanized the transatlantic relationship and will continue to make clear to China, which the U.S. labeled a "decisive enabler" of Russia's war, that malign actions around the world will not go unanswered. With that in mind, I believe Ukraine should be allowed to use ATACMS and other American made weapons against legitimate military targets in Russian territory - regardless of location - that threaten Ukrainian sovereignty. At the same time, the United States should support our allies and partners in allowing Ukraine to use similar weapons systems, including Storm Shadow missiles, against those same legitimate military targets. As you have said, U.S. support for Ukraine will continue to adapt and evolve based on battlefield needs. The work of this administration and its facilitation of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, in conjunction with Ukraine's other allies and partners, has made this very clear. With Ukraine's incursion into the Kursk region, and their continued fight across a dynamic front line, the U.S. must provide Ukraine with every opportunity to strike back against Russian forces, regardless of their physical location, who continue to bombard civilian infrastructure, kill innocent Ukrainians, and threaten Ukrainian democracy. Sincerely, William R. Keating Ranking Member Subcommittee on Europe CC: The Honorable Antony J. Blinken, Secretary of State, U.S. Department of State The Honorable Lloyd J. Austin III, Secretary of Defense, U.S. Department of Defense
